Farm Accounting
Rural sector accounting, taxation and business advice demands some special skills. David Russell is considered by many to be the ‘guru’ of farm accounting. This course will cover practical and relevant topics that are a timely reminder of what rural practitioners should know.
For instance, the ordinary old partnership structure is no longer fashionable. Many farming clients are now using Trusts, Companies or more recently the new Limited Partnership structure. But we still have huge numbers of family farms and other businesses operating as general partnerships.
A whole new raft of tax legislation relating to general partnerships was passed into law in March 2008. Some of the new law was quite ‘flaky’ and major amendments were enacted in October 2009. There are still a few problems, but we now have some clear guidelines on how to deal with changes in partnership structures e.g. someone selling out or reducing their partnership share; someone else buying in.
Practical Course Highlights
Partnerships: David covers practical guidelines, tax rules surrounding death of a partner, partnership dissolution and how to cope with relationship settlements which dissolve a partnership business
Farm Expenditure: David examines deductibility of farm expenditure, capital versus revenue distinction and farm development expenditure.
Livestock Valuation: we pay particular attention to common traps and problems and how to make right choices on which valuation methods our clients should be using.
Who should attend?
Anyone involved in farm accounting, whether an accountant, banker, farm management consultant, or legal advisor.
